Saving Money on Construction

An Economic Stimulus for Every Project

Are you interested in an Economic Stimulus for your next construction project – a stimulus that can increase your construction value by 5% or more, and allow you to spend less time and have fewer worries? If so, select a project leader who will represent only you, and has a proven system of generating and measuring increased value.

The Value of Independent Owner Leadership: The greatest single need on most construction projects is independent leadership by the Project Owner of a collaborative process, that has proper checks and balances. Only leadership provided by you, the Owner, can maximize your value by overseeing and integrating the design and construction teams (GC or CM), as they focus on their roles and maximize their performance. The stronger your knowledge and leadership, the more value the process will deliver.

The 3-Legged Stool:  The value of checks and balances cannot be overstated, and is only realized with each of the three roles (3 legs of the stool: Owner-Architect-GC/CM) kept separate. The more you abdicate your responsibilities to the Architect or GC/CM, the less value you will receive. And as the Architect or GC/CM take on Owner responsibilities, they experience conflicts of interest and tend to over-emphasize their leg of the stool.

The Sitton Stimulus: When done right, an investment in independent, knowledgeable leadership can pay back $5 for every $1 invested, while you focus your time on running your organization.

Survey Results Reinforce the Need for Owner Oversight

Morrissey Goodale’s 2009 A/E Industry Report Card provides the following results for Architects/Engineers when evaluated by Project Owners:

  • Keeping on Budget: more than 40% of the grades were “Cs” and “Ds”
  • Quality of Work: nearly a third (31%) of the grades were “Cs” and “Ds”

Regardless of who is responsible, budget and quality problems cost the Owner. It pays you to effectively lead and manage the A/E’s and GC/CM’s efforts.
